Google Business Profile Verification Guide

How Google chooses a verification method, what current video evidence requires, and how to separate a pending profile from a suspended one.

Illustration of storefront, signage, documents, and mail supporting a business profile verification process

Verification is how Google confirms that a person is authorized to manage an eligible business. The method is not a menu you control. Google automatically decides which options are available for the profile, and may require another method after business information changes.

This guide separates Google's current instructions from one first-party Kentucky case. The official rules are the default. The case study shows what happened in one seven-week process, not a workaround guaranteed to repeat.

What verification establishes

Google Business Profile verification confirms that you are authorized to represent the business. Eligibility and accurate representation still matter after verification; a code or approved video does not override the profile guidelines.

Before starting, confirm that the business makes in-person contact with customers during stated hours. Online-only businesses are not eligible. A service-area business may qualify when it travels to customers, but it should hide an address where customers are not served.

The methods, and who chooses

Google automatically determines the available methods. You cannot switch to an option that the profile does not offer.

MethodWhat you doCurrent timing note
Video recordingRecord and upload one continuous video from the Business Profile on a mobile device.Google says review can take up to five business days after submission.
Phone or textReceive and enter the code using the phone option Google offers. The code arrives through the selected channel; a later profile review may still apply.
EmailReceive and enter the code at the email address Google offers.Use only the offered address and keep access to it.
Live video callJoin a video call and show the location, business evidence, and management access requested.Available only when Google offers it.
MailRequest a code at the eligible address and enter it after arrival. Most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.

Do not pay anyone for a verification method or code. Google does not charge for Business Profile verification.

What video verification asks for

Google requires a unique, unedited, continuous recording made and uploaded through the Business Profile on a mobile device. The video must be at least 30 seconds and show three kinds of evidence:

  1. Location. Show nearby street signs, landmarks, the building exterior, or other context that matches the profile location or service area.
  2. Business existence. Show permanent signage for a storefront, or tools, branded equipment, products, vehicles, or work materials for a service-area business.
  3. Management authority. Show access to staff-only areas, a point of sale, keys, branded vehicles, or business documents that match the profile name.

Home-based and service-area businesses are not automatically excluded. Google gives them their own evidence examples. Plan the route before recording so the video can move from location context to business equipment or documents and then to proof of management without a cut.

What to check before another attempt

Google does not publish a ranked list of rejection causes. Use the notice, the method instructions, and the representation guidelines to audit the profile before trying again:

  • Real-world name. Remove taglines, service keywords, city names, or legal suffixes that are not part of the name customers see.
  • Eligible location model. A storefront must receive customers there. A service-area business that does not receive customers at its address should hide it.
  • One profile. Search for an existing or duplicate profile before creating another.
  • Evidence parity. The business name and address on documents used for verification should match the profile details.
  • Video completeness. The recording must show location, business existence, and management authority in one unedited video.
  • Pending edits. For mail verification, changing the name, address, or category or requesting another code can invalidate the code in transit.

Home-based and service-area businesses

A home-based business can qualify when it makes in-person contact with customers. If customers do not visit the home, configure the profile as a service-area business and hide the address. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says the overall area should generally stay within about two hours of driving time from the business base.

Verification still must establish location, operation, and management authority. For video, that can mean nearby landmarks, the tools or branded equipment used to serve customers, and business documents that match the profile. Do not invent storefront signage or publish a residential address just to make the profile look conventional.

Documented case: my own profile

My home-based SEO consulting practice in rural Kentucky was configured as a service-area business. Two postcards were requested and neither arrived. A video attempt did not complete the process. The full case ran seven weeks, with roughly four weeks spent pending before the support loop became the focus.

After the first postcard did not arrive, I added my physical address to the profile hoping a different verification method would become available. It did not. The address changed a core field and blurred the service-area setup while verification was pending. Do not add an address to a service-area profile while verification is pending.

In the final support exchange I named the repeated documentation loop and supplied 14 URLs showing the business active, Chamber-listed, and working with clients. The profile went live three days after that email. The sequence is documented; it does not prove that the URL list caused the decision.

What to do when verification stalls

  1. Read the exact status and instructions in the management account. Do not diagnose from the public result alone.
  2. Compare the profile against Google's eligibility and representation guidelines. Correct an ineligible address model, duplicate, or real-world-name problem before another submission.
  3. For mail, respect the stated window. Most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Do not edit the name, address, or category or request another code while one is in transit.
  4. For video, confirm all three evidence groups are visible. Location, business existence, and management authority must appear in one continuous recording.
  5. Use Google's verification status tool when the stated review window has passed. Include the profile details, method used, submission date, and exact status.
  6. Keep a dated record. Save case IDs, submissions, notices, and the documents provided so the next contact does not restart the story.

Verification is not suspension

These states require different responses.

Verification proves management authority for an eligible profile. Suspension or disablement is an enforcement state shown for a profile that Google says does not follow its guidelines. Do not guess at a trigger the notice does not name.

If the management view labels the profile suspended or disabled, do not create a replacement profile. Use the appeal route and support the case with evidence. The mechanics are different enough to need their own guide: what to do when your Google Business Profile is suspended.

Current timing guidance

After you complete a verification method, Google says profile review can take up to five business days. For mail, most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Video review can also take up to five business days after submission.

If the stated window has passed, use the verification troubleshooter with the submission date and current status. Do not promise a completion date or assume that another method can be selected.

Suspended rather than pending?

The reinstatement service starts with a free assessment. Most straightforward cases are a $500 flat fee; complex cases receive a fixed quote after the assessment, before any work begins.

FAQ: Google Business Profile Verification

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Google says profile review can take up to five business days after you complete a verification method. For mail, most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Use the verification troubleshooter after the applicable window passes.

Why does Google keep rejecting my verification?

Use the notice and method instructions rather than guessing. Check the real-world business name, eligibility, address or service-area model, duplicates, document parity, and whether the submitted video showed location, business existence, and management authority.

What does Google video verification actually ask for?

Record and upload a unique, unedited video through the profile on a mobile device. It must be at least 30 seconds and show the location, evidence the business operates, and proof that you manage it.

Can a home-based business get verified on Google?

Yes, when the business is otherwise eligible and makes in-person contact with customers. Hide the home address if customers are not served there, define the real service area, and use Google's evidence examples for service-area businesses.

Is verification the same as being suspended?

No. Verification confirms authority to manage an eligible profile. A suspended or disabled profile is an enforcement state and uses the appeals tool. Do not create a replacement profile while an appeal is under review.

Match the next step to the profile status

If verification is pending beyond Google's stated window, check its status with Google. If the management view says suspended or disabled, the initial assessment is free. Most straightforward suspension cases are a $500 flat fee; complex cases receive a fixed quote before any work begins. If the evidence does not support an appeal, I'll say so.
